I have been reading "Rock'N'Roll Soldier". It is about a young musician named Dean Kohler who was drafted in the Vietnam War and became a military policeman. The book ends with Dean was sent home and he was integrated back into "The World" (that is what Dean calls normal life). He got a new job after he was discharged and then soon bought a new car. I find the ending interesting because after all the crazy stuff that Dean has seen in Vietnam (burning trees, snipers hiding in rice paddy's, etc.) he was just expected to go home like he was supposed to forget everything he saw as soon as he got home. Though he was able to do that with the occasional night terror. He described a reoccurring one like: "I saw him again. The soldier lying dead on the sidewalk, His brains blown out behind him. The blood pooled around the soldier. 'It should have been you.' whispered the body. I turned around and I saw Ioli, Sugden, Jessen, Lynda, Judy, Dad, even Mom this time standing around me chanting what the body whispered, 'It should have been you!' 'It should have been you!' I woke up when my alarm clock blared in my ear jolting me from my nightmare. I was drenched in my own sweat."(Kohler 261) This shows being a soldier is no easy feat and the soldiers' lives should not be sacrificed for war.
I believe this book matters because it shows a normal person like us get turned into a machine of war. It shows the tolls that war has on an individual mentally and physically. It shows the sacrifice soldiers give for normal citizens of the USA (who don't go to war). Today soldiers STILL sacrifice themselves for us in places like Syria and Afghanistan. We should most definitely be grateful towards them.

There are many similarities between the war in Afghanistan and the Vietnam War. In both wars, the opposition to the USA used dirty tactics. In Vietnam, the Viet-Cong used punji sticks and many other Jungle traps like rusty fish hooks and tripwire bombs. In the Afghanistan war, Jihad and Guerilla warfare were used to fight off unsuspecting American soldiers. Both Wars were proxy wars, meaning wars where two parties support two sides of a war for their own benefit. Finally both wars were had very much loss. Loss in life and loss in money.

He described his life there to be terrifying on the first couple of days. The Vietnam war was historically The United states first loss in a war, so it was very devastating. Community Issues Writing Hunger
According to the North Carolina Association of Feeding America Food Banks, North Carolina has one of the highest levels of hunger in the United States. About 81% of people don't know where their next meal will be coming from. Surprisingly 36% of food pantries turned away from people because of the lack of food. An estimated 73% of households have to choose between paying for medical healthcare or food. About 75% households have to choose between warming their homes and buying food. Another 61% have to choose between paying for a house or paying for food. Sadly 22% have been estimated to be in the military. And 6% are in the military right now. Hunger can affect anyone in our community. We are interested in this issue being that a lot of people are affected and nobody deserves to be going hungry at night. Others should care about this issue because they could feed a hungry but also they could know a person that is going hungry but they don't know about it.. So we are hoping to do a food drive. Whichever eighth grade homeroom brings the most food in gets Krispy Kreme™ donuts. The food we want to bring in is dried rice, beans, canned food, and water. We will then give this food to CPO, a donation service, to have them distribute it to our local community. Hunger can affect everyone. It affects kids, adults, military, nonmilitary, male and female. More people than expected or known are affected by hunger. Anybody in your state or city can be affected by hunger. Since the very founding of NC, hunger has been an issue. It influences some people's ways of life. They live minimal paycheck to minimal paycheck. Hunger can grip families longer than it should. Hunger leads to crime, crime takes away jobs. Jobs provide money, which provides food. Hungry kids are young, and they can’t get jobs to prevent their hunger or their family’s. People can starve to death, to delirium, or crime. It is very shocking what mental effects hunger has on certain people. We should do all we can to help prevent hunger from influencing our surrounding community. Donate or volunteer at local places to do your part in fighting hunger! If this issue is not taken care of unforeseen consequences will occur; crime, death, disease. These local places are sometimes founded by people directly connected to those who suffer due to hunger, maybe even their family. Many places have hungry people seek them, although some special places like the Brown Bag Ministry, go seek the hungry. These places thrive from volunteers who help prepare and share the food. The food comes from donations. Some people don't have enough time to volunteer their service, so they just donate food instead. You can’t feed someone once and expect them to never hunger again. These locals still rely on donations and volunteers to provide their next meal. Food isn’t unlimited to these individuals or organizations. This effort to stop hunger will continue many years into the future. We will always need assistance to fight hunger. Some people have gardens, some have soup kitchens, food pantries, and other organizations. All of these examples will continue to feed the hungry. People will always be hungry and we need to continue feeding it. Our plan is to do a food drive where each eighth grade homeroom is competing for the reward of three dozen donuts! The homeroom with the most donations of canned food, dried rice beans, and water will win the reward. Expired food will not give progress towards our goal of 1200 donations. That's approximately four donations per person! The collection progress for the food drive will be aired on the MMS student news every Monday. All donations will be collected from homerooms every Thursday and kept in the front office after collection and counting. After the drive is over, will give the donations to CPO, a non profit organization that provides food pantries and soup kitchens . Remember, every donation counts. We will start the drive on April tenth. And the first collection date will be on the thirteenth. The second collection date twentieth. The third collection date will be on the twenty seventh. The last donation collection day will be May fourth. We will give out the prize on the eight. Will your homeroom get the most donations and win the donuts? Get involved! Bring your extra canned goods. I'm not very good at introducing myself in a private setting. I am pretty awkward with new people. Around my friends, I am sharp witted and a jokester. The sad truth.
Many cats and dogs are homeless and/or unwanted. These friends need help from humans to survive in our world. Out in the world, it is not safe for them. There are many people who abuse and mistreat there dogs. Also, dogs and cats are in danger of being hit when they are aimlessly wandering around. Sadly, some drivers who hit animals do not help the injured animal. There is unpredictable (From their point of view) weather and dangerous areas like construction sites and mining areas. With no fences or safety precautions, these animals can be hurt very bad very quick. This is where you come in: Loving human beings bring these strays to vets and animal shelters to save their lives. Many pet shelters have made a giant impact by have saving countless animals from neglect and homelessness. This issues doesn't directly affect humans, but this problem affects animals tremendously (insert sarcastic comment here). Second chance is an organization that helps homeless pets find homes. they have save many lives and have made a huge impact in this issue. One in four children are food insecure in NC.
61% of NC families rely on food banks for food. NC is ranked one of the worst for hunger in all fifty states. All of these claims are true. Hunger is a very big problem in North Carolina, heck, it is a problem in the whole world. I think that we all can help with this problem on both a local and a a global scale. Rise against hunger is an organization that I have worked with in the past (no joke) at a nearby YMCA. It was previously called Stop Hunger Now. They have packaged 782,784 meals this week alone, and 310,225,765 over the 7.6 years they've been around. It is very fun and easy to help at locations in your area. TAKE ACTION! |
